Biography
Paul Slater (artistically known as “Apaulo”) is a professionally recognized brushed metal illustrator, industrial designer, sculpture conservationist and sustainable community advocate. Through his business "Public Art Works Inc.," he employs a vast knowledge of materials and processes, engineering technology, ecology, sociology, and philanthropy. As a reflection of years past, his volunteering, formal education and art apprenticeships have unfurled into diverse creative aesthetics and substantial exterior installations. His work focuses on progressive public art ventures. Many of Apaulo’s processes combine ultra-high speed tools, hot and cold patinas, harmonic resonance, and features of environmental awareness in the compositions. He envisions artistic architectural and engineered installations where form and function have a symbiotic relationship of strength, unity, and innovation. Whether the composition is kinetic, abstract, impressionistic, or photo realistic, Apaulo's artwork embeds thought provoking stimulation that transcends our boundaries of mystique.
Apaulo Art
Vision
My dynamic brushed metal illustrations employ an impressionistic painting style onto a metallic medium to represent urban life in the natural world. A brushed metal holographic polish and burn melds the dichotomy of industrial alloy with delicate impressions of nature. With intelligent art and design, I seek to entice sensory stimulation of our senses regardless of our handicaps thus contributing to the enrichment of our communities. In addition, a portion of proceeds from art sales, assist non-profits with their outreach programs, as well as, serve as beautification projects for "Art in Public Places."
Mission
I parallel my passions for health and wellness with love for the arts and sustainable developments. I aspire to promote the beauty of social and environmental prosperity via modern art culture. A majority of my life I have spent working alongside artisans, craftsman, pioneers, and traditionalists. I have seen the technology, I have felt the impacts of vulnerability and I lived among those who desire more from humanity. As a volunteer and friend, I am dedicated to uplifting community though the arts.
Approach
My extended education derives from my obsessive capacity for learning and continued education. Proceeding the Academy of Art (San Francisco), Build it Green (Berkeley, California) and, Laney/Merritt Peralta College, I continued to seek accreditation in green building architecture, and metal fabrication. My “Real world” work experience in both corporate and private industries has driven me to succeed as both as an entrepreneur and contributing citizen to society. Countless volunteer hours have further developed my greatest experiences and accomplishments.
Apaulo Art - Artist Statement
Apaulo Brushed Metal artwork is a technique of applying very fine hand polished grind lines with precision high speed tools. By stacking and arranging the angles of these polished grind lines, a glimmering 3d holographic composition emerges that moves with the viewer. The satin polished metal can be of natural tones or vibrant and colorful. Often, the work incorporates harmonics and kinetics, as well as, visual and temporal simulators to reach everyone regardless of handicaps or disabilities. The opportunity to engage the public with intellectual thought, mystery, and intrigue are a few of the greatest rewards of making the art.

Sophistication, Conservation and Collaboration
A special thank you, I owe my sincere love and gratitude to seasoned master metal artists and personal mentors Mickey Johnston, Michael Sturtz, Carla Hall, Jaime Viada, Jon Allen, as well as, countless artisans of glass and fire. My apprenticeships along side of these successful master craftsman not only shaped the curve on my metallic future but, showed how art plays a vital role in the character of a community and the relations there within.
